Injunction on Birthright Citizenship Executive Order

A federal judge in Maryland issued a nationwide preliminary injunction on President Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship.  The judge’s injunction blocks President Trump’s rule that would have prevented any individual born on U.S. soil to unlawfully present parents or those in the U.S. temporarily (such as worker, student and tourist visas) from automatically gaining U.S. citizenship.  A federal judge in the state of Washington previously issued a temporary block on President Trump’s executive order.  The executive order would have gone into effect February 20, 2025 and would have likely denied U.S. citizenship to more than 150,000 children born each year and leave many of them stateless.
